Starting the Season in Solvang
The 2026 race season kicked off for me on March 7, 2026 in the hills around Solvang, California where light winds and blue skies made for a great spring-like day of riding. The Solvang Century offers three route options through iconic Southern California wine country. In order to maximize coverage of all riders, I focused my efforts on two locations where the routes overlapped. Downieville Classic Downhill 2025 (Sunday)
On Sunday I hiked down to shoot an interesting, technical section of the downhill known as, “The Gorge.” It was impressive to see the top riders drop into and climb out of this challenging feature without hesitating or slowing down. It is an unusual piece of trail with a steep rocky drop in transitioning abruptly to flat terrain, followed by a short rocky climb back up and out. Riders began in the mud and snow once again, but the course did dry out considerably by the afternoon. We even saw some sunshine before the end of the day. Overall, it was a great weekend of racing in memorable conditions.

2025 Solvang Century Athlete Photos
On a cold morning with a thick marine layer in place, riders set out from Solvang, California on a scenic tour through Central Coast wine country. The athletes had the option of a century, metric century, or half century ride on country roads with rolling hills. Riders faced sustained climbs, but nothing particularly steep. 3,879′ of climbing lay ahead for the riders who signed up for the century ride.
