Scenes from Day 1 of Sea Otter: Enduro Stage 1, Dual Slalom Qualifier

This was the first year I’ve attended and photographed Sea Otter, the world’s largest cycling event, in Monterrey, CA hosted by Liftetime. Despite hearing about the races for years, I didn’t really know what to expect from spending five days there.

As with many things in life, the experience is often different than the expectation leading into it. Since I generally don’t like spending too much time in large crowds, I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy covering the event or if it would feel like a work-only trip. However, as I immersed myself in the event, I was pleasantly surprised by the electric energy, the overwhelming sense of community among attendees, and the captivating course scenery above Monterey. And, of course, photographing the top athletes in their respective discipline adds to the excitement from a photography perspective. From the races to the vendor booths, the event offered an abundance of experiences. But, in so many ways, Sea Otter greatly exceeded my expectations and I had a great time from start to finish.

On Day 1, I focused my efforts on the Enduro Stage 1 Race and the Dual Slalom Qualifier, which together presented an exciting start to the week.
